Photoluminescent sand is made of alkaline earth metal aluminate. Under standard lighting conditions it has a pale-yellow colour. In low light conditions, it emits yellow-green or blue-green light. Photoluminescent sand is designed for the glass industry and glazing.

Photoluminescent sand must not be modified mechanically (by grinding, crushing, etc.) since this has negative effects on the photoluminescent properties.
